Implementing information for health: Even more challenging than expected?

Learning points from paper

Over 150 factors have been identified as the key factors that can predict electronic patient record / electronic health record (EPR / EHR) implementation success, but only two are consistently associated with successful implementations:

  1. Top-management support
  2. User involvement

Other factors that influence positive outcomes:

  • Local champions who actively and enthusiastically promote the system, build support, overcome resistance and ensure the system is installed and used.
  • Systems must be ‘bedded in’ for at least six months before decisions about the success of the technology can be made.
  • Buy-in of the organisation is important. All users must see the need for change if they are to support it.
