2009.03.26 Overcoming the challenges and harnessing the opportunities of health informatics-related R&D

“We will continue to transform health research in the NHS by implementing, consolidating and building on the Government’s strategy, Best Research for Best Health, for the benefit of patients and the public. Our researchers have made a great contribution and will continue to do so. However, too often innovation has been defined narrowly, focusing solely on research, when in fact innovation is a broader concept, encompassing clinical practice and service design. Service innovation means people at the frontline finding better ways of caring for patients – improving outcomes, experiences and safety. In this country, we have a proud record of invention, but we lag behind in systematic uptake even of our own inventions”   Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham KBE Hon FREng, FMedSci – High Quality Care for All – NHS Next Stage Review Final Report – July 2008.

Event summary

Health Informaticians can and do play a key role in both design and developing new technologies for the benefit of patients and in supporting clinical care through the provision of timely, relevant and secure patient information.

However, despite Lord Ara Darzi’s encouragement to apply research for the benefit of patients more effectively and the key role that Health Informaticians play in this many Faculty members felt that their potential contribution to the R&D agenda still wasn’t fully recognised or understood.

In order to try and realise the full potential of Health Informatics and Health Informaticians to Research and Development the Faculty Board approved a programme of work during 2008-09 focused on 4 main activities:

  • The production of a briefing paper scoping the obstacles, challenges and opportunities in HI R&D and focused on how these could potentially be overcome. This paper, written by Dr Jean Roberts, was published in January 2009 on the Faculty and HIC sites on eSpace (see original website version):
  • The development of a Research Repository to promote the sharing of HI research carried out by NHS students as part of academic studies undertaken in Higher Education.
  • Sponsoring Faculty members to write a range of practical, action-orientated position papers, summarizing the key issues in specific HI R&D topic areas for key stakeholders in the HI field and recommending pragmatic ways forward in 2009-10 and beyond.<li">
  • Presenting these papers at a Faculty sponsored HI R&D Think-Tank in March 2009 from which a wide cross-section of stakeholders involved in the Faculty and in HI R&D can agree priorities to incorporate into the Faculty’s Business Plan in 2009-10 and beyond.

This Think Tank and Action Planning event is the culmination of this work for 2008-09, but most importantly tries to set the future direction for the Faculty in 2009-10 and beyond.

It will see the launch of 5 different Position Papers on key issues and opportunities for Health Informatics related Research and Development.
